Week 7.

Here is the opportunity to post your favourite photo(s) of a particular species taken in 2013 (or the last time you saw one!).

This is part of a series of topics which will grow over 20 weeks throughout the winter, eventually covering all 59 species which are regularly found in the British Isles. The intention is to showcase three species per week (in alphabetical order), so please wait until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos. Our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants.

Details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome and please feel free to contribute observations of behaviour, stories of personal encounters, anecdotes or other interesting points.

Vince

Green Veined White

This was taken earlier in the season on one of my stop-offs. It was one of the first shots I got at this new site which was basically just a lay-by on the edge of a quiet village along the Avon. The trees on either side of the road open out here with enough room for three cars to pull in and it’s complimented by a small area where wild flowers grow in profusion. It’s my favourite because I was happy with the way I managed to capture the “veins” really showing them off.

I seem to have been very lax in my butterfly photography this year, especially in the earlier part of the year, but I do have one or two Green-veined Whites. I like this one for the sprinkle of dark scales around the veins:

I'm afraid this photo was from last year. I don't seem to see many down my way, or is it that I don't manage to distinguish them from other whites?
Anyway this one was swaying wildly in strong wind so I was lucky to get a photo at all.

This is my favourite Green-veined White of the year, seen near a small stream in Roquefort-les-Pins. It was in the company of several Orange-tips, Cleopatras, Clouded Yellows and a Nettle-tree Butterfly, which I very rarely see. I also saw some Green-veined Whites in my garden this year for the first time, even though I don't grow any Brassicaceae, except as weeds perhaps.

This is was taken in our garden in Bucks. The brunnera flowers proved very popular with this species.

Anyone who has read my UKB diary will know that I have a particular liking for the subtle beauty of the Green-veined white.

Some favourites below of one individual which spent a while one afternoon in May flitting about on some Spanish Bluebells in my garden.
I like the first one with my garden path providing the background colour...

To finish with I also like this shot taken on one of my jaunts around Solihull which shows the lemon yellow colour of a nice fresh summer brood individual.

A much underrated butterfly in my opinion!

My favourite specimen of 2013 was this female which was photographed on 24th September at West Williamston in Pembrokeshire:
