I'm afraid my photographing skills are limited but the point I wanted to make is that there is definitely no white pupil in the eye. The other thing is that it is no bigger than a Gatekeeper. Is there a pupiless variant?

Definitely a Meadow Brown (male) despite the small size and lack of a pupil. This species is enormously variable in this respect, with some individuals having double pupils and some with none.
