Peacock numbers

In all my life I don't think I've ever seen more than 50 Peacocks on a single day. However, today at Aston Rowant I saw about 100. As I drove home I saw a fair number by the roadside and upon returning to Abergavenny there were six on a buddleia opposite the local shop and another two on the buddleia in our back garden.

I've still only seen about a dozen Red Admirals this year, but Peacock numbers are simply astonishing at the moment.

Are they about in large numbers everywhere and can anyone remember seeing similar huge numbers in years gone by?

Hi David,

They are certainly around in large numbers in the midlands, I have not been counting there are simple too many :D

I also remember back in April that after a late start there were large numbers of Peacocks coming out of hibernation at some of my local sites around Solihull, I remember posting in my diary at the time that I was finding them everywhere.

This past week up at Arnside fresh Peacocks seemed to be just appearing. I saw none on Tuesday morning, a couple on the afternoon and then on Wednesday over a dozen. The same with Brimstones, none on Tuesday and then on Wednesday, in the same spots, 20+ fresh ones.

Cheers,

Neil F.

Peacock numbers up here are very high too. I saw at least 40 on a patch of buddleia on Thursday and good numbers of them just flying past east to west. Not sure where they are coming from or going to!
Also very high numbers of Small Whites, Large Whites, Small Coppers and Small Tortoiseshells just now.

They were absolutely all over the buddleias in Abergavenny this morning. I must have seen over 50 in less than 2 hours.
