Sites in Cornwall

Hi all,

I am going to Cornwall on holiday early sept, we will be nr Falmouth, is there any where that i might find a few butterfly's?

The sites I know are a bit further east:

Cabilla Wood, east of Bodmin - park on minor road off A38 at around SX128652 and walk west - too late in the year for fritillaries but should be plenty of the commoner woodland species.

Helman Tor SX062615 - there is a (very narrow) road up to near the summit. The Tor itself acts as a beacon for migrant butterflies and Hummingbird Hawk-moths. Next-door, Breney Common is a site for spring fritillaries but in September will be good for dragonflies.

Penhale Dunes (Padstow area) is good for blues, though only Common Blue and Brown Argus might still be on the wing in September.

These are the sites I know. Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary is double-brooded in Cornwall and could be on the wing then; I don't know any specific sites but might try the coastal heaths around Land's End and St Ives. Also should be Wall Brown along the coast.

The dunes around Hayle and St Ives are supposed to be good for butterflies.

Also a good time for migrating Monarchs if the weather is right!

Thanks very much for your reply, I have made notes of the sites that you suggest, St Ives is a favourite place so will definitely be looking there, we have very little variety of species around where i live so would love to get a few more
