Even our own modest white butterflies are capable of incredible 'acts of camouflage'. When watering the garden shrubs a week or so back I disturbed several Small White that had decided to roost on Japanese Hydrangea that was in flower, the following night I checked again before watering and even after a thorough search I could see not a thing, then I watered the plant and five individuals were seen to rise from areas of flower I had searched with some care, the insects wings are so similar to the petals in both shape and colour that its amazing, and they naturally assume a posture that hides the abdomen...I'm in awe of such intelligent means of survival.

Bill :D

Here's an example of camouflage seen this morning in the Alpes-Maritimes. Fortunately I saw this (male?) Tree Grayling land, as otherwise I wouldn't have seen it on the ground.

And then the sun came out, and it was more clearly visible.

That certainly is an amazing moth and Colin's tree grayling is pretty impressive too. But when it comes to looking like a leaf when you are actually a fat, tasty caterpillar, I think our own purple emperor gets the Oscar:

Apart from a leaf looking like a butterfly,my photo of a Danish Grayling shows how difficult they can be to see.
