Heath or Provencal?

This beautifully fresh fritillary was photographed in Var, France last week. I'm pretty sure it's Heath but would prefer it to be Provencal as that would be a life tick.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Nigel.

You wouldn't have an upperside shot would you, Nigel?

No upperside shots i'm afraid David. I'll check with my mate Pete as he was with me in France.

Hi Nigel. It's a beautiful shot but the heavy branding in s.2 of the forewing underside very strongly suggests heath fritillary, as does the general appearance. This is ssp. celadussa, which has much clearer and more discrete orange spots in the submarginal band of the hindwing than other subspecies.

Sorry Nigel, following this one I found a pearly heath and any afterwards I couldn't be sure they were the same individual

Possibly the same species seen at the same location?

Hi Pete,

This last photo is of a pearl-bordered fritillary, Boloria euphrosyne.

I suppose it has to be, but the hind wing corner is surprising.
