I found this little guy in my garden this afternoon, the first butterfly I've managed to take a photo of for months! :D I noticed white rings around the black spots on the bottom wing and it was roughly 1.5cm across

Nice pic, Vawn :) The recent warm sunshine has brought the Spring species out in force, with Holly Blues now plentiful in my Oxon garden.

The early flight period (of the first brood), silvery-blue colour, and chequered fringes all mark this out as a Holly Blue. I think that, because the underside is in shadow, the pale edges to the dark spots are more noticeable than usual. In sun, the underside looks almost silver.

Nice find. Holly Blues aren't rare, but they're usually seen singly and can be quite a challenge to get close to. They often keep their wings firmly shut too, so you've scored a try AND a conversion. :)
