Small Tortoiseshell potted 09/02/06

Hello All.

I have just found a Small Tortoiseshell on the wing in a corridor in Wye, Kent.

I am really surprised to see it this time of year (Feb 9th) has anyone any ideas if this is "normal"

The Small Tortoiseshell is one of our hibernators (along with Brimstone, Comma and Peacock), and often hibernates in out-houses and buildings. If their body temperature raises enough (such as indoors) they may then fly around.

And you're very lucky. I've yet to see my first butterfly of the year :)

Small Tortoiseshell sighting

I was lucky and saw a Small Tortoiseshell flying up the road I live in in Reading yesterday (15.2.06). There had been patches of sunshine in between the cloud and cool breeze. The last thing on my mind had been seeing 'blue spots' go by as I hauled all my shopping in but it was an encouraging one! Spring is definately here!
