Good Sites Near Hailsham Sussex

Post by Paul Harfield »

I have found out that I will be stuck in Sussex in the Hailsham area for 2 days in the middle of April next year. I will be on my own with nothing to do. I know it is a long way off and a bit early. Hopefully the weather will be perfect for spring butterflies :D

Can anybody suggest any good butterfly sites in the area :?:

Hi Jack,
Mid April is just a little too early to guarantee any good action, but in a warm, 'early' season you may get lucky at High & Over/Cradle Valley near Seaford. In early years you might catch the odd Green Hairstreak, Grizzled, Dingy or Small Copper here. Park at TQ509011. Walk NE on the south side of the Alfriston Road until you find a gate and can cross north over the road at a (dangerous) blind bend (at TQ511013). On north side follow the path through the gate and start dropping downhill to TQ510014. From here head west keeping to the base of the slope.

Hi Jack,
Neil is quite right that this is a fab site although being North facing mid April may be a little early for some of the species unless we get a warm spring (please)!! This is my local patch living less than a mile from there. Send me a PM if you wish and if I'm off I can show you around.
Bob.

Hi Bob and Neil
Like you say its a little bit early, so I will be keeping my fingers crossed for a decent warm spell. Many thanks for the detailed directions Neil and the offer of a guide Bob. Plenty of time to plan.
