Hi,

Another puzzler for me. Can anyone help with this. I hope that its a female Adonis Blue. The pictures were taken on Old Winchester Hill on 25th August. The butterfly was at the bottom of the hill straight down from the car park and there were a few males in the vicinity as well.
Thanks
Robin

Robin,
I would say that it is almost certainly a female Adonis Blue, on the fact that the black lines cross the white margin on the upper wings.
Also the right time for the 2nd brood.

Hope this helps,

Rock

Looks like Adonis Blue to me. Although it's hard to see the colouration between the red dots on the hindwing and the white border, it has the right "sheen" to me. And, as Rock says, it's the right time of year for 2nd brood and looks very fresh.

Cheers,

- Pete

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the id of this and the Essex Skipper. I went to OWH again this morning and got better shots of a female Adonis Blue which shows the blue shading of the scales between the red dots and the white border so I was more confident in calling it an Adonis Blue. I have sent this and some other shots taken today the the Hampshie Butterfly Conservation webmaster - whoever that might be

Cheers,

Robin

I hear he has a strong resemblance to Brad Pitt. Brad should be so lucky :)
