This was photographed in Bulgaria in June. I think it is Chequered Blue - would someone kindly confirm (or otherwise  ).

I think that's a female Eastern baton blue, Scolitantides (Pseudophilotes) vicrama.

It's this modern habit of phonetic spelling that causes problems, it's an Eton baton blue (probably on holiday during the parliamentary recess)

Sorry Mike - your witty correction coincided with my editing my own post! :D I shall leave the corrected version and acknowledge humbly that sharp eyes spotted it before I did...

... And now, as I post this acknowledgement I find JohnR is there too!! :D :D

I blame my upgrade to Windows 8, which resulted, for technical reasons, in my mousepad becoming hyper-sensitive so I have had to change my touch-typing hand position!

I take it you'd rather it was chequered blue - sorry! Unfortunately, I'm confident it's not. There are lots of reasons but a sufficient one is the submarginal region of the forewing. In chequered blue there is a strong double row of spots. In Eastern baton the inner row here is strong but the outer one is vestigial, giving the impression of a single row of spots. The hindwing orange pattern is also different, being much stronger and better defined in chequered blue.

As I am sure you realise, this is the time of year when one has to find something to write about, in the absence of any butterflies!

Good luck with Windows 8 - I'm still in the dark ages of XP :D

I should also say to Antonym that those are nice photos of whatever Blue it is.

Agreed. And hats off to Guy as I thought it was Chequered Blue as well. :(

The 'AAARrrrggh!' was just that I managed to get it wrong - again....
