Quick search on the net it looks most like a Plumbago Blue Leptotes plinius
Thats as far as I can get with this one.

It does look like Leptotes - but a country at least would be good to pin down the species! :D

Is it a specimen from a butterfly house?

I've no idea what the butterfly is, but the same picture has been posted on the Talk Photography Forum, here:http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums ... p?t=438984
The poster's location is Brisbane, Australia, so that should narrow things down!

I'm sticking with Plumbago or Zebra Blue (Leptotes plinius) as it is found in Australia.

Paul was spot on. This is the only species of Leptotes found in Australia. To cap it, this is a female, laying on the larval hostplant, Plumbago auriculata.

I have seen Leptotes plinius in India, where it is rather different (and known as the Zebra blue):

The hindwing pattern is the giveaway for Leptotes. Our own L. pirithous is very similar.

Hi Guys,

Many apologies for not responding as I have been on holiday.

A friend of mine posted the picture to me, He advised me he took it whilst on hols near Hastings in Sussex.

Could it be an escapee from a butterfly house on the south coast?

Does he know that Stephy from Brisbane posted the same picture on her Flickr page (as Dave O'B pointed out earlier)?
