ive entered some images of moth species in the annual competition
is this allowed or is it just butterflies?

Hi Danny,

While moths can be entered, they don't really fit the criteria so might be disadvantaged as a result. I'm afraid we don't have a Moths category (or categories for other taxa - such as dragonflies, spiders, birds, reptiles, mammals etc.!). What do folks feel about this for future years? I must admit, most BC comps I've seen do include a "Moths" category.

Leps in general should be allowed in my opinion. I don't think other insects/arachnids/general creepy crawlies should be though otherwise where would it end? Chaos! You'd have photos of bird and fungi and all sorts

Looking back, in 2008 a moth larva won the immature stages, and came 2nd over all.

Wow! Many, many stunning images.

Must admit though that I don't recognise most of the names.

Wow I am surprised! I thought I didn't stand much chance this year as there were some really stunning images I was up against. The level of the competition has once again improved and I was quite envious of a lot of them!

Makes getting up at 4am and making the 1.5 hour drive to the mountain where I photographed this worth the effort now! As the low cloud cleared and the sun broke through a gap in the leaves, this was the first butterfly to wake that morning. Just a couple of minutes basking and it was gone!

I always expecting Nigel and Matt to be up at the top and it was great to so many other worthy contendors among them from so many different photographers.

Well, FISHiEE, all I can say is that your photo was definitely worthy of the prize. I've seen a few Sooty Coppers and they're nowhere near as photogenic as most of the other members of that family, yet you managed to turn one into a winning image!

Where did you take the photo? Was it a male or female (I can't tell from the underside alone)?

The butterfly is a female. Only the female has that amount of orange in the forewing upperside.

I also got some shots of the wing upper sides I could check to be sure.
With From below, with the bacllighting, you get the orange on the underside accentuated by the orange coming through from the upperside. Definitely the beter angle of the butterfly is co-operative!

It was photographed about 2/3 of the way to the summit of Mount Ventoux in southern France.

Appreciate the response. Yes, the females are more eye-catching than the males but still a distance behind Purple Edged/Shot/Scarce/Large Copper.

Congratulations to all the winners,i would especially like to congratulate young Ben Kiteley,considering his age his images are amazing,(he does have a good teacher in his dad),as for me there is always another day lol,

For what is it worth I loved the two-tailed pasha and Eastern Bath White from Rodosranger, the grass jewel from Paul Wetton and the scarce copper by Nigel Kiteley.The annoying Czech's large white was very good apart from the damaged wing. I still strongly believe the entries should be anonymous as in most camera club competitions. I preferred John Bogle's pair of marbles to his winning photo which just goes to show how much beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well done to all the winners and those who nearly won!

I couldn't make my mind up whether to enter or not and when I did, I struggled to decide which photos to enter.
