Hi all, I found this during my my Moth/Butterfly hunting sessions in Galicia last week, it was feeding on Pellitory on the Wall, any opinions?.

I was wondering if the lack of replies may mean i have got it wrong and its a Moth?, I watched the Cat chewing off a leaf of P.o.t.W rather than eating it if that helps.

Could it be a Red Admiral? I think I've read that they use this foodplant as an alternative to nettles occasionally. Colours vary a great deal with these larvae - I've just looked at the images provided by a Google search and some are very close to this one.

Hi Steve,
your catarpillar is the larva of the Red Admiral, which sometimes, but rare, lays its eggs on Pellitory-of-the-Wall.
All the best, Nick.
