Aberration?

Post by neil »

This photo shows 2 white specks in the black spot, which should mean a Gatekeeper. However the specks on the underwing are not white but black, which usually means
a Meadow Brown. So which do I have here please? There are other similar butterflies in the same field.

Hi Neil,

Its a Meadow Brown, not an aberration.

All the best, Nick.

Some meadow browns, especially females, have two white pupils in the apical spot, even though the pictures in the books always show just one.

Vince's lovely underside shot in the meadow brown species page on this site shows this: gallery/images/upload/8a322e7ff6dbc6747 ... e41133.jpg
