Is this a Painted Lady?

This butterfly was guarding the top of a large dune near Hauxley in Northumberland on 5.7.2012.
I watched it for about 20 minutes as it repeatedly chased, and was chased by, a Red Admiral, presumably over territorial rights.
It seems to have seen alot of action, and from the way it circled me a number of times, I would not be surprised if it was sizing me up as well!
Any thoughts as to what this butterfly is would be much appreciated.

Yep, that's a Painted Lady - about the tattiest I've seen!

I've got a tattier one that that, taken during the invasion in 2009. I wondered if there was any mileage in starting a tatty butterfly thread. We all try and photograph the most pristine specimens we can find, but what about the other end of the spectrum?

And here is a Meadow Brown from last July at Ifield. I think that's about it from me at the moment. Anyone else?

Wonderful thread of geriatric individuals.
Now how do I post a picture of my seriously troubled geriatric left knee? (built some 74 years ago but sadly failing now !)
Butterflying is actually quite difficult at the moment but I am not giving up - yet.

This is a Greenish Silver Washed Fritillary but was so battered I had to check. It was taken in 2010 at Garston Woods very late in the season and was my first ever encounter with this genetic form, so i was more than happy the following year when the same site yielded a fresh individual.
