Making the most of the sunshine yesterday, the 24th, I spent some time watching Orange-tips in a sheltered arable field margin. Two females were seen laying on Charlock plants. Another rejected the advances of a persistent male with the usual display which I captured in a blurred but action-packed photo!

A second image taken a few seconds later shows the female still with tail raised but not apparently showing the amber warning spot. I wondered whether the colour is part of the warning to the male that she is not interested:
