The Bulgarian spring thread has got me thinking, will we be able to see anything in late april. Hopefully subject to no big meltwater floods we are spending 2nd half of april going up the Rhine from Cologne to Basel (4days there) & back down river again. My wife will be with me so cannot go off hiking etc but then she is not taking her golf clubs! lol. Anyone ideas or suggestions for wildlife & butterfly watching side trips? Might be able to get in the odd half day & do hope to see a few birds along the river. Will Storks & other migrants be back by then? Eric

Hi Eric,

Kaiserstuhl is a very good area for wildlife, it is situated about 15km Northwest of Freiburg in the upper Rhine plain. It is the warmest place in Germany and has a mediterranean climate in some places. The highest peak is at 550m and you should see plenty of wildlife at the end of April. It is an excellent place for orchids (36 species have been recorded), wildflowers, butterflies, beetles, birds (bee eaters do spend some time there) and reptiles. Well worth a visit!
