Going to Arnside for first time...

Post by davegb »

Hi,
I'm going to try and get up to Arnside Knott either today or tomorrow weather dependent. Specifically for the clouded yellow and possibly the brimstone if it's out yet... (And anything else I can find!)

Has anyone got any hints on where to go, I've heard it's a big place and could spend all day just wandering aimlessly!

Many thanks,

Dave.

Check out the photos and map here...

I've been twice recently and seen 1 brimstone and 1 clouded yellow (I think) both on the wing from a distance.

If you want Scotch Argus then go to the top of the Knott near the Toposcope and then through the gate behind it. About 30m on your right there's a small clearing that's nice & sheltered - Look on the Ragwort!
Take nothing but photographs. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time.

If you're after brimstone you could also take in Gait Barrows, which is only a couple of miles away. I saw several brimstone (along with various other species) during a visit in late July, and they were drinking nectar, and therefore approachable for photos. There's a place where you can park beside the road and follow a path that leads down to Haweswater. Just before you reach the lake, the path splits and skirts round a small enclosure, full of wild flowers. That's where I saw them.
