Unidentified ... erm ... thingymebob!

As the butterfly front is a bit quiet at the moment I hope no one will mind my posting this here.

A friend of mine in Australia has posted this picture of some critters which are feeding on an apple leaf. He would really like to know what they are, and so would I, can anyone help?

believe it or not well at least i think they are sawfly larvae, if it was UK i'd guess at something like Caliroa cerasi
