Took this series at Arnside Knott this year days before Golden Orfe was there. There were lots of Frits on the wing but they wouldnt keep still in the heat of the day.
Have studied the replies to Dilettantes post but still cannot make my mind up about this individual. Could someone more experienced with HBF please give their considered opinion on this please and put me out of my misery ?

I'd say that's a male dark green. Not what you wanted, so let's hope someone else disagrees! :D

I'm with Guy on this. Even when viewing the images at full size, there are no raised pheromonal bands visible on the forewings - these are very noticeable on male HBFs.

I'd say Dark Green too :(

Yep looks like Dark Green as the row of spots along the forewing are all in a straight line bar the one nearest the body. This is not normally the case with HBF where the spots form more of a sigmoidal shape rather than a straight line.

Thankyou Gentlemen !, not to worry, it just presents the opportunity for another visit !! . I was erring on the side of DGF, but not having experienced HBF before I could not be certain. Maybe I will try an early morning visit next time when they are not flying round like Sebastian Vettel ! :)

I agree also a DG. sometimes the offset spot is more difficult to tell , these show clearly that it is in line with the other spots.

it can be very dificult without seeing under wing on some individuals!
