It's all in a name

I met a photographer the other day who was proudly showing me his new camera.
“Much better and bigger than my Dickon”. Eh yes
(Well, you learn new jargon every day).
I pressed him.
“Yes it was a 6 megapixel Dickon with only a four times zoom” (or something like that).
I politely asked if he really meant
Nikon (I said it Nick-on).
“Ah yes, that’s what I meant”.
Out of interest, is NIKON pronounced
"Nick-on" or
"Ny-kon"? I am never sure.

I can assure you that he didn't have a cold nor did he have a speech impediment. He genuinely seemed to think that he had owned a Dickon camera.
The sunset we photographed at Heacham nr Hunstanton was impressive.

Which species are the birds in that mightily impressive picture, Jack?

The company was founded in 1917 as
Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha. That suggests strongly that the correct pronunciation is your first option, Jack.

As I thought (though the one in the foreground looks more like an Oystercatcher).
