I set out this Spring and Summer to make an effort to see and photograph more British species, and I've been building up this 'sticker album' as I go.

Almost all these photos were taken this year, but there are a few (Wall, Painted Lady, Peacock) from previous years where this year's photos weren't as good. All the blank spaces are species I've yet to see, apart from Purple Hairstreak, which I've seen but yet to photograph!

Hopefully next year I'll fill in one or two gaps, and get better pictures of some of these.

It reminds me of the series of cigarette cards from years ago. My mum is looking after my set.

If they were the ones I had, they were Brooke Bond tea cards. My mum managed to throw mine away (along with some old comics which would now be worth a significant amount). The commentaries on the cards would make interesting reading now: I believe the Comma was described as scarce and the Large Tortoiseshell not uncommon in Southern England.

I did it in Photoshop Elements. It's easy enough if you're happy working with layers and things.

I think this is just brilliant. So much so, that I've created a Powerpoint template to help me better-see which "gaps" I have (can't be bothered to faff around with Photoshop since I'm never going to show this to anyone!). I've been going through the skippers this morning and have been culling all sub-par images (which are most of them!) since I purchased my first digital camera way back in (I think) 2002! The template is attached, and I'm using the same layout to visualise whether I have a decent photo of male upperside, male underside, female upperside, female underside, ovum, larva, pupa. The template is attached, in case anyone wants it!

Very impressive dilettante, this format suits them perfectly, I think it looks like the digital equivalent of a butterfly cabinet. You could print it up once you have the full set (which I'm sure you will eventually) frame it and then stick it up on the wall, naturally where everyone can see and enjoy it

Hope you manage to fill the gaps next year. I really cannot believe how quickly the 2011 season has passed
