Looked everywhere to try and find out what this is, but haven't found an answer yet...anyone help please?

Pretty Chalk Carpet - Melanthia procellata, according to my newly acquired Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland.

looks to have been out a while too so a pretty early pretty chalk carpet

Aha! I had suspected it could be a moth and browsed moth websites but clearly didn't find it.
The species makes sense for the location - in a woodland clearing in the chalky North Downs in Kent.
