Caterpillar seen on Cheshire and Peak District Field trip
21st May at Tegg's Nose Country Park Good turn out on the day but we only seen one a bit battered Green hairstreak.
I think we all enjoyed the day

I think your hairy caterpillar is that of an Oak Eggar moth (Lasiocampa quercus). Curled up they have those curious black bands. The caterpillar doesn't actually eat Oak - apparently, the insect gets its name from the fact that its cocoon resembles an acorn.
