Focal Squares

Yesterday the focal square in the middle of the view finder on my camera seemed to stop working. Instead, the lower square (directly below it) flashes red. Switching to manual focus doesn't prompt the central square to flash either.

I'm aware you can programme which square you want to be the primary one but I have tried that and that doesn't seem to be it.

This is all on my default AV setting. However, if I switch to the auto setting, the central focal square flashes! :?

Back on AV, I have today tried manually focussing with the central square with no red flash and also using the lower square and could probably get by, it's just, well, different.

I have a Canon D10 with a 24-85mm zoom lens. Have I broken it?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Lee

OKI
half depress the shutter botton, and release - then quickly press the centre of the "joystick" button.
That will (hopefully) selct the centre spot again.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for that. The D10 doesn't have a joystick button though (or does it and I'm being silly?).

I figure on later models it would be the middle button of the wheel that changes exposure levels and so have tried that but it didn't seem to work.

Is there something else I can try?

Thanks

Lee

If your camera is a Canon 10D, you need to press the AF point button and the Assist button together, at the same time. See http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos10d/page8.asp for more info.
