Skippers

Post by Paulcrook »

My second attempt(s) at trying to find and Essex Skipper in my collection. Could someone let me know if these are Small or Essex Skippers please (hope the last photo comes out okay - it's a few years old).

Thanks

Paul

I've made many mistakes over these but I think the first three are small skippers. The fourth could be essex but is too indistinct to be sure.

I don't think it is. The underside of the antenna should be black for Essex, and those are Orange.
On the other hand, the other 3 shots show a diffuse black marginal border. This is a sign for Essex, Small having a well defined border.

All this according to Lafranchis...I'm no expert.

Martin.

It's the underside of the antennae tips that you have to look for. It's difficult....
Here's one I took earlier:

I can't 'see' the images put up by Paul Crook but the link posted by Eccles is an Essex Skipper (IMO!)
