They look like Small Eggar moth caterpillars to me - good find Bex

Thank you very much. I've just had a browse and read on the web about them. Apparently it is now restricted to a few scattered colonies in England and Ireland, and a few localities in Wales.
have to confess I'm not really a moth person, infact I'm still fighting a bit of a childhood phobia but its getting better.
