Botany Bay.

This Sunday,as well as seeing many grey Wood Whites,I saw my first Wall of the season.

That's what I thought at first,but I was puzzled by the rings on the lower wing all being the same uniform larger size,as in the Wall,as in Collin's giude.

Pete is, of course, right, though. The sizes of ocelli vary greatly in many browns and that is not a reliable feature for identification. The colours and markings of this butterfly are unambiguous.

I live two miles west of Botany Bay and have never seen a Wall but now that you point out the similarities I shall gives the Speckled Woods a second glance.

I am sure Pete is always right.I just find all these small differences rather difficult and the guides don't always give the correct picture.But,I do know all about animal diseases,that is what I am qualified in!
