Cambridge - Moth talk?

Post by Trev Sawyer »

Just spotted that Paul Waring (moth expert and co-author of the "Field guide to moths of Great Britain & Ireland") is talking about some of his trips around the world at a Cambridgeshire Bird Club meeting on Friday 11th Feb... Full details at: http://www.cambridgebirdclub.org.uk/
I intend going along and maybe some other members of the "Cambridge UKButts Massif" (Charles, Nick, Jack?) might also be interested?
There is a small charge for non-bird club members, but anyone can attend.

A very entertaining talk last night - well worth hearing if Paul does something similar thing near you.
Knowing that he had been involved in the lepidopteran world for many years, I was half-expecting a wizened old gent with grey beard and glasses - in fact he was sporting a black quiff and could easily have been a member of a 1950's tribute band. He was clearly extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his subject, but managed to aim his talk at those whose first love was probably not moths (it was actually a Bird Club talk).Tales from Paul's adventures around the world in search of moths was interspersed with slides - one showing the result of a mass arrival of huge Elephant Dung beetles attracted to the light of a moth trap in Africa was a real eye-opener. His description of the incoming cricket-ball sized beetles "pock-marking" the mud wall of a village house before falling to the ground in a huge heap had the audience in stitches.

Speaking of Moffs (and birds), Trev:

Cambs&Essex BC should be running a moth-trap in Cambridge in early May. TBA - watch http://www.cambs-essex-butterflies.org.uk/index.php

and on Sunday 8th May, the Friends are holding a Dawn Chorus Walk, in Mill Road Cemetery 5:30am meet.
(We heard a willow-warbler in there last year, right in the City centre)
