Rude awakening

This afternoon, I heard the unmistakeable sound of a butterfly's wings fluttering against glass. I went into the spare bedroom and there was a Small Tortoiseshell flying against the window. I caught it, gave it some sugar diluted with warm water and took a few photographs (on top of today's newspaper to prove it's not a hoax!)

I've put it in an egg box and will wait for it to go cooler this evening before putting the box in the shed, whereupon I'll keep checking it until releasing it when the first flowers emerge (probably early March).
