Blue with partial black bars

Post by neil »

Photographed this Blue on the border of Beds and Northants. It has partial black bars on the white border. Doesn't seem to be an Adonis nor Common Blue. Is it a hybrid, or something else?

It is a common blue. The species does sometimes show half-chequering, though rarely as prominent as this.

Adonis blue has full chequering, often (on the forewing) actually being stronger in the outer half of the white fringe.

Here's one from Totternhoe (Beds) earlier this year. Only Common (and Small) Blues in those parts..
