Possible cause for bad winter 2009-10

I red this some time ago and was going to post it then, but it slipped my mind completely. I can't find the webpage I read but it said the cause of the cold winter we had was due to El nino and la nina.
The warm El nino currant that brings warm air to create warm water of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru and Ecuador every four to seven years, collided with la nina that brings cold air and cool waters to the central Pacific Ocean to bring cooler water there and caused the very cold weather we experienced over the winter
