Help please

I've visited Mill Hill a couple of times in the last two weeks specifically to find Clouded Yellow and travelling from Nottingham it's a fair distance. Two Clouded Yellows were seen last Sunday and as I missed these I must have been there at the wrong time during the day. I moved on to Malling Down in the afternoon.

I would be grateful for any information as to where Clouded yellows have been seen at Mill Hill and at what time of the day. Any updates of Clouded Yellow sightings at Mill Hill or any other sites during this week would be hugely appreciated as I intend to take another trip down to Sussex possibly this Sunday weather permitting.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Hi Paul,
As in most years, when Clouded Yellows arrive at Mill Hill they usually stay put. Most years it's only a handful, but when they are there, this is a reliable place to see them. Last time I visited there was one male and one female. They (particularly the male) are doing the usual high-speed 'fly-pasts', ranging over the entire slope and adjacent areas. Just stand at the base of the slope (near the dilapidated steps down the chalk scree slope) in good weather and they will appear after a while. Just to the right of this area, you will see a patch of regenerating scrub - the female occasionally stops in here to nectar on thistles etc.

Thanks for the info Neil

I had a good walk around the area you mention but no luck last Sunday. Possibly didn't wait around long enough. If the weather is ok I'll try again this Sunday.

Thanks again

Paul
