Hi, Please can anyone identify this Caterpillar. Not sure if it is a Butterfly or Moth.

I think this is a sawfly larva. It has too many "false" legs for a butterfly or moth. As to which species, someone else may well know...

Thanks Millerd, That's a great help and narrows it down quite a bit.
I will have to spend some time looking up Sawflies now.

Hi, there is yahoo group for sawflies http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/sawfly/ very knowledgable chaps on there. what plants are nearby for it to have come from?
looks a bit like a poplar sawfly larvae Cladius (Trichiocampus) grandis but can't remember if it is hairier than this one.

Looks like a Ruby Tiger moth larva to me.
