Identification please

Post by chris h »

Hello,
I am new to the site.
Last week I saw a red and black butterfly on my lavender. I have only now got round to trying to identify it but is not in my
british butterfly book. It was pure black and pillar box red with a lacey pattern a little like the monach butterfly. Its body was jet black and furry.
What was it?

Hi Chris - this sounds like either a Burnet moth or a Cinnabar moth. See:

Cheers,
