Garden Tiger Moth larva Ang. Not as common as they once were - the original "Wooly-Bear" caterpillar.

It was at Catfield fen in Norfolk, don't think I have ever seen one before but your explanation says it all.

Easily my favourite British moth - my grandmother used to have loads of caterpillars in her garden and the adults really are spectacular insects. They look like you have let a young child loose with a collection of brightly-coloured paints and a brush. They even have a little red headband.
