If you have a pair of red-cyan 3D glasses lying around the house (red on left) you might appreciate this piccie of Julius, one of my wild purple emperor larvae:



I took two successive pictures and his leaf was slightly swaying in the breeze, so it's not perfect. I'll keep working on the idea!

I much prefer stereo photos that require the cross-eye technique to view. Red/Green glasses are fine for those who don’t need to wear spectacles, but virtually useless for those who do. Cross-eye technique is easy with practice.

True, Jack. But anaglyphs have the advantage that they can be viewed at any size (and you can always wear the glasses over your regular glasses). Cross-eyed pictures have to be quite small, so you can bring the two pictures completely over each other.

It's only for fun, though I did have a serious intention when I made the pictures - to illustrate the maths of 3D and the physics of colour to my students.

Nice idea - as long as you have perfect vision in both eyes. I recall going to Alton Towers as a kid and putting on those 3D specs to watch a 3D film - I couldnt see a thing as I have a lazy eye/squint. I wasn't sure if the new technology and use of polarised glasses for 3D meant Id be able to see the new versions. I was of course being as thick as a plank - although the new polarised glasses for 3D look identical - they aren't - and you can of course only see true 3D if you have good vision. Consequently all my family get to enjoy 3D films and i just have to miss out o put up feeling sick watching out of register images. Now High Def images on the TV - that's a different matter. As for you having the Purple Emperor - I am very jealous as I have still not seen the adult, let alone the larva!
