Today I have snapped a clouded yellow. I have determined it preliminary as Colias alfacariensis (the black spot on the forewing is big and round) but I am not sure. Is it posible to determinate this butterfly after the attached photo? (Here is the link for the same in larger scale but the focusation isn't good).

It is not possible to be certain, but I would say that is alfacariensis with a high degree of probability. I have netted and examined in the hand a great many in the last two years, and tentatively think I now have a good feel for the differences in wing shape and jizz. Near me, alfacariensis is by far the commoner and it has a 'familiar' feel for me. When I see hyale it looks distinctly different and this has so far been well confirmed by hand examination. If an important record hangs on the determination, this is not sufficient proof, though!!
