For those that are interested, a blog mechanism was added to the forums and ran for a couple of years. However, the lack of true integration within the forums meant that it was unused, aside from a few members. We hope that using a forum for diaries (or "blogs") will breathe life back into this aspect of the website!

Here is what I wrote just now in my personal diary:

"If no one has any objections, I propose to 'tidy up' my personal diary a little so it remains more or less on track as a record of a year in the mountains rather than a year in the pub!! That will mean deleting this recent digression in particular, fascinating though it might be!!

As a moderator, I can do that. I would suggest, as a policy, that all forum members should feel free to ask one of the moderators to delete posts from their own personal diaries, and that these spaces should be seen as proprietary domains where the diarist has ultimate editorial control.

I wouldn't dream of deleting a post outside the personal diaries unless it was obscene, cruel, racist &c. But maybe we should adopt the principle that if you post to someone's personal diary they (and only they) might, without giving offence, have the post deleted, to maintain the integrity of the diary.

You may reply here if you wish, but I'll probably delete your post in due course!

I agree with everything that has been said in the last two posts, in particular the pustulous sore bit. Can i apply to be a moderator?

But it can backfire. Some time ago, I posted in another’s diary a polite (well I thought it polite) suggestion to enable the diarist to get more out of butterflying. Umbrage was taken and I was told in no uncertain terms never again to post in that person’s diary.

I have never again posted anything in that diary as it is clear that any ideas I have – even though I think they might be helpful - are not welcome. So I no longer even bother to look at that person’s diary.

Who is the loser there?

I suppose this thread raises the question of why post a personal diary on-line at all, if you don't want comments?

On the other hand, too many comments, or lengthy digressions, can break the thread, although it's not always easy to migrate the sub-thread to another location. Overall, I would agree, therefore, that a personal diary owner should be able to delete items. I regard all my posts as pretty ephemeral, so would not take umbrage.

I like the way this site allows a certain amount of humour and digression but would be content with deletion, once the joke is past.
