National BioBlitz 2010 - looking for lepidopterists

Post by paulbioblitz »

I hope users won't mind me posting this to the forum...

Bristol Natural History Consortium (Registered Charity: 1123432) are co-ordinating this year's National BioBlitz Programme. A “BioBlitz” is a large scale event that engages large numbers of people with biodiversity, inviting them to get directly involved in surveying and monitoring. This year they are being held in 14 locations across the UK and as it's International Year of Biodiversity, we're hoping to generate real engagement and excitement about the project. Fundamental to a BioBlitz are the natural scientists, biologists, teachers, and enthusiasts who volunteer their time and expertise by leading the public on biodiversity surveys. The events cannot happen without naturalists in each specialist field, and so we are looking for lepidopterists across the country to get involved.

The BioBlitzes are taking place this year between May and August, in the following areas: London, Bristol, New Forest, Nottingham, Lincolnshire, Derby, Cambridge, Lancashire, Northumberland, Swansea, Flintshire, Westbury, Devon and Brighton. Further details of where and when these will be happening can be found on http://sciencecitybristol.com/in-the-ci ... litz-2010/ (a couple of them are still to be confirmed). If you would be interested in coming to any of the events as an expert on lepidoptera or having a further chat about what is involved then do drop me an email via the forum. Likewise, if you have any associates or colleagues across the country who may be interested, do pass on this information.

If you'd like to register directly as an expert for the BioBlitz, there's now an online registration facility at http://www.bnhc.org.uk (follow link to 'BioBlitz', then 'Get Involved'). More information about Bristol Natural History Consortium is available at the same address, along with a video from the 2009 Bristol BioBlitz. BioBlitzes are a really exciting way of engaging the public with biodiversity and I really hope that some members of the forum will be able to get involved.

Many thanks!
