Web Images

Hi all,

After noticing that some of my images look nowhere as clear on the website as they do in Adobe Lightroom, I decided to have a play around. Obviously, the full-size image is always going to have more detail than anything posted on the web, but there's quite a lot of fiddling to be done when converting for the web, and I was wondering what others do.

I've updated all of my images to increase the amount of sharpening and also reducing the file size considerably! I was originally exporting images from Lightroom using no sharpening and highest quality. It turns out that 80% quality is perfectly fine (with no discernable difference from 100%) and the file size is halved. But setting the sharpening options to "high" makes a lot of difference! Old and new shots are below.

I've also started using Apple Safari as my main browser since it supports colour managed images (as does Firefox if you install the correct plugin) - something that Internet Explorer doesn't support (which means I see something different in IE than I do in Lightroom). This means the colours of the images in Safari are exactly as I see them in Lightroom, since the posted JPEGs include the colour profile I use in Lightroom.

Hi Pete, I used to struggle with getting the sharpening right. I now do most of my sharpening in camera, I then find I only have to do a tad on the PC, and usually even if I shrink a hi res image down to 800 pix, I don't have to sharpen again.
