More help wanted with an ID!

Have you got any ups shots? My first thought from the underside was Carcharodus, but it seems there aren't any Caracharodus species in Senegal. I tried some closely related genera on the funet site but nothing leaps out at me. An ups shot would help pin down the genus, which is obviously the first step, especially as it may well turn out there are relatively few of each genus in Senegal.

Hi Guy,

Happy New Year!

Unfortunately, it didn't really open it's wings (the weather was dull!) before it flew away...

Here's the best shot I have:

Mmm... It still looks like some hitherto unknown species of Carcharodus to me. If someone does identify it for you, apart from through these pages, please do make a post to say what it is.

Adrian does, apparently, have the complete series of Bernard d'Abrera's Butterflies of the World, which retail at over £200 each and comprise 18 volumes. I'd need to be a millionaire before I set up the rival service... :(

Oh - and I return your New Year greetings, Rezamink!

Hi Guy,

I might just give it a go...

Had a quick look at the web-site and he certainly seems to know his stuff!
Some amazing photo's of Amazonian butterflies as well!

If I do manage to get an ID, i'll update this site with it!

Cheers for your help!

Hi,

I took your advice and Adrian Hoskins has successfully identified this species as:
Gomalia elna elna

I believe it has the common name of African Mallow (or Marbled) Skipper.

Cheers

Well done!

I wasn't a million miles off - this genus is in the Carcharodini, not that far from Carcharodus... :D
