Doubtless many will have seen the BBC investigation into “Night Hawks” – illegal metal detecting hunters at preserved archaeological sites working in the dead of night.

One guy, armed with metal detector, spades, etc, was challenged as to what he was doing: “Butterfly hunting” was the reply.

So don’t be surprised during next year’s Purple Emperor season to see the Sussex Kipper and his mate Matthew Oates staking out Southwater Woods, Alice Holt Forest, Fermyn Woods and other emperor hotspots using the latest electronic kit in search of their quarry. No one will believe them if they claim that they are merely “metal detecting for buried treasure”.
