I need a new ball & socket head for butterfly work on a monopod. Any recommendations or 'dont buys'. My Benbo head is old and getting hard to lock solid. :D

This is about as good as it gets for a monopod.
Have a hunt around on E-Bay. IIRC I got mine there for about £15.00 brand new.

Good luck

Hmm,,,i'm a bit afraid of quick release heads, because i have the habit of carrying my monopod with camera attached over my shoulder 'Dick Whittington' style. I keep a food bag handy in case it rains, which i slip over the camera. I find this approach quicker in the event of a butterfly encounter. :D

They do the same head non-quick release as well.

However, there is a very effective lock mechanism on the quick-release.
I have the same QR on my tripod ball head, and it has never let go by accident.
You will find the QR plate is easier to get really tightly screwed in than the using the thumbwheel on the non QR version.
There is little more irritating than having the camera loosen itself every few minutes.......
