Looks promising. Meanwhile, while Alpha mount users are crying out for a long tele-prime, Sony has announced three more cameras, meaning they're the only major camera manufacturer that has more camera bodies than lenses.

At £1000 a pop I'll need some convincing.

I'll suppose I'll just have to wait until Roger gets one at then try it out at the next workshop

Actually its more around £850, but being a "L" lens, should have the quality. But even if I had the money, I wouldn't be rushing to get one. I would like to see some sample shots from it to see how good the quality actually is.

Bet they also may be interested in this Canon 7D. The new AF system looks very intriguing.

I don't think there's a 1:1 macro prime currently available that isn't sharp, and I can't see Canon selling a lemon for that price. It's whether you want the convenience of the image stabilisation vs some means of support. Denise gets by pretty well with a £20 Jessops monopod so I can't see her jumping at it. Gary might because he's a gadget freak.

18MP 1.6x crop sensor? Users at this level aren't going to be swayed by megapixels in the same way that new users might be, so Canon have either pulled off something amazing or are right in the cacky. I hope it's the former because we need some sense in the megapixel war.

I was a little concerned about image noise, on the 50D at first, but found the built in low noise programme sorted that. Whether or not this works as well with yet 3 more mpix, remains to be seen.

Nice Macro Yes I'll have one thanks. Don't need a new camera body though, very happy with my 50D and my 5D MK 2.

Careful, Denise. Lens lust is a terrible thing. I currently have around five different lens options capable of shooting butterflies, more if I include the extension tubes, but Mifsuds have acquired a consignment of very desirable Minolta glass including a 600mm F4 and a rare Minolta 200mm F4 macro, the latter at around the same price as the new Canon jobby. Can I justify it?

I'm really lusting after a Canon 300 F4! Anyone want to sell one?

Not long enough for birds, go for the 400 f5.6 L but don't visit Mifsuds if you want to hold onto your cash as they have a ton of Canon stuff.

It would be with a 1.4X converter and a great lens for the elusive Hairstreaks etc.

Like the BH we encountered at Shipton Bellinger you mean? Forget the DSLR and get a spotting scope and Nikon P&S.
