Photo Gallery upgrade

Hi all,

I intend to attempt a major upgrade of the photo gallery tomorrow morning - between 0900 and 1100. The forums will be unavailable during this period.

I'm basically removing the old photo gallery mechanism, and replacing it with a new mechanism that is far superior. It has a couple of minor bugs, but nothing to worry about. More importantly, it will address many of the enhancement requests that have been requested. Even more importantly, the chap that has written this capability is supporting it - whereas the existing mechanism has been out of support for over a year!

All existing photos and albums will be retained.

If things don't work as planned, I'll revert back to the current version.

Cheers,

- Pete

I'm pleased to say (and relieved!) that the new gallery feature installed first time!

All of the existing images (and albums) have been retained.

Hopefully - the new gallery is self-explanatory - and packed with features. Post any comments / questions / bugs in this thread please. I've already noticed that, when moving from image to image (in full-size mode) - it takes 2 clicks to achieve rather than one.

This new gallery mechanism is not only supported, but will allow us to do lots of things that we've been unable to address up until now. Watch this space!

Cheers,

- Pete

Hi Pete,

I use sub-silver, because I don't like pro-silver, and I have no photo gallery.

Ah! Subsilver is was out of date. Hmmm.

Ok - you'll need to change to prosilver for now. I'll look into upgrading subsilver and will let you know when it's done.

Cheers,

Ok - I've tried "fixing" the subsilver2 style, and although the galleries now appear, there appear to be some other problems that have crept in - noticeably, the inability to post messages!

Still looking into it ...

The subsilver2 theme is now working again (with galleries!). It's currently missing the blog feature, which I'll get to at the weekend.

Hi Pete,

Love the new upgrades. I have have now created a gallery for the first time and have downloaded a few images mainly for test purposes.

Two questions:

1. Is there a maximum number of images that can be accommodated in my main personal album or each associated sub-album? I want to post a photo of each species in the main album and then have male/female, upperside/underside in the sub-album.

2. How do I access a sub-album? I saw a link to one last night but cannot find it again.

Thanks,

Vince

There are currently no limits and I hope there never will be!

Just so you know, I'm going to be creating an album, per species (and for each stage for that species), so that members can put their photos in what, I hope, will become the best source of images for any species found in the British Isles! I'll "seed" these albums with my own images. These albums will then become the source of all images seen on the various species pages and will remove a major headache for me - which is uploading all the images I get sent. I still need to think about conventions etc., but that's what I'm planning (and one of the main reasons for implementing a new gallery feature).

It depends what it's contained in - I need something more specific before I can answer that! For example, all of the photo competitions are in subalbums.

- Pete

Hi Pete,

Having a species pages to which members can contribute sounds like a great idea and may be all that I need.

I may have misunderstood your earlier reference to sub albums. You said we could create our own sub albums in our personal albums. Could you explain what that means and how that process would work.

Sorry for being thick :?

Cheers,

Vince

No worries.

1. Go to your personal album.

2. At the top of the page, below your name, you should have 2 options - "Edit Album" and "Create subalbum".

3. Click on "Create subalbum".

I think that's it :)

Cheers,

- Pete

Pete, thats a great job, alot faster at loading images and multiple uploads are better.

Now that would be a nice feature, be quicker way of adding images of species if anyone has them, instead of just sending them to you and you putting them on, I know how rigerous that can be.

Actually that Highslide JS your using for galleries, I have started using it on my website for loading images and information, cuts alot of things down for me and its a great tool for websites I must say, you can do a lot with it as I have figured out by using it.

Love the new album set-up.
Can you move images from the main personal album to a sub album?
eg, My UK Butterfly album include some photo's taken last year in Kos, which I want to move into my sub album 'Overseas'
Is there an easy way to do this? Or do I have to move them one by one, which will loose the ratings, comments etc?
I'm probably missing something really simple here.

Hi denise,

Below the image you should have a "Moderate" link. If you click on that, you should have options to delete, edit and move. Let me know if you don't!

Cheers,

- Pete

Tried that. I have edit and delete, but not move.
I tried the edit selection, but still can't move it.
I also reverted to prosilver in case I was missing something, but I still have the same options.

Hi Denise - it should now work. Some of the permissions were set incorrectly on personal albums!
