In the month of July I was hoping to find and photograph the following:

Glanville Fritillary
Marsh Fritillary
Heath Fritillary
Duke of Burgundy
Large Blue
Small Blue
White-letter Hairstreak
Black Hairstreak
Large Tortoiseshell?

Are any of these still flying in July?

You're too late for:

Glanville Fritillary
Marsh Fritillary
Duke of Burgundy
Large Blue

The following will be on their "last legs" as it were:

Heath Fritillary
Black Hairstreak

You should be able to see the following:

Small Blue (2nd brood), which is just starting in some locations
White-letter Hairstreak

The following is an extremely rare migrant and is impossible to plan going to see:

Large Tortoiseshell

Thanks for the info, it is shame about the Large Blue since I planned to see that when I came here. I was told that the Large Blue and Duke of Burgundy have another brood through July, is this true?

Hi - there amy be some Large Blue still flying - but I think they'd be pretty much over by now. They're single-brooded.

The Dukes are usually single brooded, although a couple of second-brood individuals were seen at Noar Hill last year - although this is exceptional.

I didn't say it was "unique" (a once only event) - but exceptional (i.e. it's not normal)!

Yes, Mike Young won a August monthly comp with a Duke in, 2007. Didn't think it was last year.

I know this is a little off subject but, I came home today to find the cat had been sick all over the fruit, in the fruit bowl. I've just looked around to see, the bowls now back in it's normal place, with the fruit all nice and shinny back in the bowl. I can only assume that Lisa has lovingly cleaned the offending cat sick off, and once more presented the fruit for my leisurely consumption, Is she serious.

Look, the fruit had previously been sprayed with insecticide, anti-fungal treatment and fertiliser. That has now got washed off with the cat vomit so you're better off than you were before. If it's your average fruit bowl there will be oranges and bananas which you have to peel anyway, so stop whinging and eat one of your five a day.

Gary doesn't do sick!

The nearest he gets, is strategically placing pieces of kitchen towel, on the offending vomit!
I'm not sure if it's a hint for me to clean it up, or a warning for himself, where not to stand.

Just for the record, It only reached two Banana's, and they went in the bin.

My sympathies Lisa.
