I met up with the Swiss recorder at the weekend and he showed me this remarkable photo he took this spring:

He spotted them on the branch and at first thought it was a dead CB, straddled on the twig - then realised it was much more exciting!

That is amazing! Seeing any Nymphalids mating is a pretty rare sight in my experience (with the exception of the fritillaries and browns)!

"CB" isn't common blue, then....

Nor chequered blue, nor Chapman's blue...

I recently started making an official abbreviations list for all European butterfles, to enable rapid communication without the possibility of confusion. Then I suddenly realised this was a very sad thing to do, so I stopped.
