Hi thepostieles,
I don't think that it's a hawk moth. No hook or point on the tail end. Here are a couple more pics that might help.

They are feeding on mainly Primrose and Scabious and the larger one measures 41mm when stretched out (on the move!)
I have searched through images until my eyes hurt, but I can't find this one.
Please can anyone help?
Denise

I have seen those before, it might be a dark form of Angle shades caterpillar (they can be brown or green): http://www.ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=814

Denise, I think they are caterpillars of the Gothic moth (Naenia typica), but not 100% certain.

Thanks Mikhail and Dave,
I was considering Angle Shades but it just wasn't quite right, but I'm pretty sure that it's Gothic :D
Just to be sure, I have dug up a primrose and potted and netted it so that I will have (hopefully) a positive ID.
Thanks for your help.
